Three people have died and another has been left critically injured in a car crash near Brent Cross retail park in west London.
Five men, all in their early twenties were in the same car when it collided with a pedestrian overbridge just before 11.30pm on Sunday (April 14th), according to the Metropolitan Police. Investigators said no other cars were involved in the crash.
Police, fire brigade, land and air ambulance crews were called to the scene, where three of the five men were pronounced dead and two others rushed to hospital, one critically injured, while the other not thought to have life-threatening injuries.
Inspector William McDonald, who is based in Barnet, said:
Emergency services responded last night to what seems to have been a terrible accident.
An urgent police investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances, led by detectives from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
Officers are in the process of informing the families of the five young people. The families will be supported by specialist officers. I send them my sincere condolences.
Road closures were put in place at the scene, and the area has seen mile long traffic jams this morning, with severe delays around Staples Corner as a result of crash investigation work, although the police cordon has since been lifted and all roads reopened, as of this afternoon.
Anyone who witnessed the incident but has not yet spoken with police is asked to call 101, quoting reference 7502/14april.
